Challenge
Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (CKW), based in Lucerne, produces, trades and distributes electricity to business and private customers. Like all market participants, it faces major challenges such as:

• Falling electricity prices
• Development of new business areas and opening up of new markets
• Liberalisation of the electricity market - free choice of energy supplier for private customers
• Digitalisation of the electricity market - automated supplier switching at the click of a mouse

The DWHs and their reporting, which were built up erratically in the past, only partially meet the constantly changing requirements. The effects:

• Data is trapped in silos and can only be merged poorly
• New requirements are implemented only very slowly or not at all
• Many business users switch to Excel
• New technologies or organisational forms are not used

Solution
iRIX Software Engineering AG was commissioned to conduct a preliminary business intelligence study and is now supporting its implementation. The following table shows the work already carried out.

In the realisation of the various sub-steps, attention was paid to balance in terms of technology, governance/organisation and added value for business users. We would like to highlight the following results in particular:

• Implementing a new Datamart and replacing an existing one (technical project)
• Establishing Scrum in the BI team (organisation/governance)
• Introduction of a DWH automation tool (technology)
